Customer Story: Steel City Neurofeedback & Wellness
Meet Steel City Neurofeedback in Pittsburgh, PA!
Founded in December 2024 by Dr. Daniel R. Mangine, Ph.D., and Larry Ciptak, LaPC, Steel City Neurofeedback & Wellness serves the Pittsburgh area and surrounding Tri State region. The founders' interest in neurofeedback grew from their work with trauma and their introduction to Infra-Low (ILF) Frequency neurofeedback, which inspired them to pursue formal training and clinical supervision with Roxana Sasu of Neurotopia.
A Personalized Approach to Neurofeedback
Steel City currently offers ILF, Synchrony, Alpha Theta, and SMR neurofeedback training. While they work with clients across a broad range of needs, their focus is on trauma recovery and nervous system regulation.
“We see many folks with arousal issues as well as those with stability concerns,” Dr. Mangine said. “While we are certainly here to serve everyone we can, our practice seems to have seen a greater influx of the former. We have been doing a lot of work in trauma titration, treating anxiety and helping with sleep issues.”
By helping the brain develop greater self regulation, Steel City aims to help clients reduce symptoms and move toward improved focus, stability, and overall well being.
Taking Neurofeedback Beyond the Office
One of the unique aspects of Steel City Neurofeedback is their mobile neurofeedback service.
“We’re focusing on serving first responders,” said Larry. “We can set up in a police or fire station and work with clients in their native environment, all we need is a quiet room and a comfortable chair.”
The mobile service is closely connected to Steel City’s Code 4 Initiative, which focuses on expanding access to neurofeedback for first responders. Through partnerships with local agencies and professionals, Steel City is working to create opportunities for local service personnel to receive reduced cost or no cost neurofeedback services. If the first responder market embraces neurofeedback, Larry said they will form a 501(c)(3) organization and seek grant monies to purchase additional equipment and train new clinicians.
“We’re currently in the building relationship phase with local police, fire and EMS departments,” said Larry. The first responder community has its nuances. “First responders will not come in if we characterize neurofeedback as ‘therapy’. But tell them they can come to the brain gym for a workout, that they don’t have to talk about anything, that they’ll sleep better, then they’re interested.”
Larry said police officers in particular often avoid seeking mental health help due to the fear of career repercussions, stigma from peers, and the risk of being stripped of their duty weapon. “Their culture tells them they are the helpers, not the ones who need help,” he said. “It’s important to frame neurofeedback as a wellness tool, not a mental health one.”
A BEE Medic “Steady Eddie”
Steel City Neurofeedback has been using a BEE Medic NeuroAmp II system since late 2024. As they continue developing their practice and mobile services, having equipment they can rely on is a critical part of their day to day work.
Larry describes their BEE Medic system as a “steady Eddie,” a simple but fitting description of the reliability they have experienced as their practice continues to grow.
Pittsburgh Roots and a Growing Vision
As lifetime residents of the Pittsburgh area, Larry and Dr. Mangine have a strong connection to the community they serve. Beyond their clinical services, Steel City Neurofeedback provides pro bono services to underserved populations and offers a sliding scale to help make neurofeedback available to more people in their community. As new members of the Neurofeedback Advocacy Project, they look forward to working with the NAP to refine the Code 4 Initiative model so it can be effectively applied to other markets.
Their combination of personalized neurofeedback, mobile services, and community focused initiatives gives Steel City a distinctive approach to building a growing neurofeedback practice.
We are excited to follow Dr. Mangine, Larry, and the Steel City Neurofeedback team as they continue expanding their work throughout Pittsburgh and the surrounding region.
