The Hidden Book of First Things – A Conversation with Sebern Fisher
Many neurofeedback clinicians know Sebern Fisher through her influential book Neurofeedback in the Treatment of Developmental Trauma: Calming the Fear-Driven Brain, which has long been recommended within the BEEMedic community.
Her new book, The Hidden Book of First Things, takes us somewhere different. This deeply personal memoir explores childhood trauma, absence, memory, identity and healing through both Sebern’s lived experience and her decades of work as a psychotherapist and neurofeedback clinician.
In this special BEEMedic webinar, Sebern Fisher joins Meike Wiedemann for a conversation about the story behind the book - and about what her personal journey has taught her about trauma, the brain and therapeutic change.
Drawing on journals kept over many years, Sebern describes the inner experience of a nervous system shaped by profound early trauma and absence. She traces the changes that emerged through psychotherapy, neurofeedback and other brain- and body-based approaches, and explores how greater regulation gradually changed her experience of herself, of others and of relationship.
For neurofeedback clinicians, this makes The Hidden Book of First Things particularly compelling. Sebern allows us to see the process not only from the therapist’s perspective, but from the inside: What happens when a highly dysregulated brain begins to quiet? What becomes possible when the nervous system develops a greater capacity for regulation? And how can these changes affect memory, identity, relationship and the development of a sense of self?
Sebern’s own experience also became deeply intertwined with her clinical work. As neurofeedback began to change her own experience, it influenced how she understood and treated her patients with developmental trauma.
This conversation will explore the connections between lived experience and clinical practice, trauma and regulation, memory and identity - and the role neurofeedback can play in creating the conditions for change.
Join us for a personal and clinically relevant conversation with Sebern Fisher and Meike Wiedemann about The Hidden Book of First Things and what it can teach us as neurofeedback practitioners.
